North Kingstown’s Samantha Morrell chalked up a stunning regional amateur victory, capturing the 54th New England Women’s Golf Association Championship with a 54-hole total of 222 at the Green Mountain National Golf Club in Killington, Vt.

The 19 year-old Morrell, who will be a sophomore at Old Dominion University this fall, carded three rounds of two over 74 and held off veteran Tara Joy Connolly from the Cohasset (Mass.) C.C. by two strokes.

Morrell wasn’t the only Rhode Island golf winner at the New England Tourney. Nancy Chaffee (RICC) won the Legend’s Trophy for golfers 65 and older with rounds of 90, 84 and 90.
